Inhibited Worship
Do you ever hold yourself back in worship? Like, the actual worship service at your church on Sunday morning?
I do. Sadly.
Why are we afraid to move to the music when we're singing? Why are we afraid to put one or both hands in the air as an outward sign of worship and/or submission? I'm willing to smile, clap, close my eyes, or shed a tear. Why can't I go farther than that? Why can't I sing louder?
For me, it's this: what will others think? And that frustrates me, because it's not about what other people think. It's about what God thinks! But I am continually singing quieter than I can. I continue to reserve myself on account of others.
But you get me in the car or at my house, when no one else is around, and I'm L-O-U-D! My hand(s) are in the air! And the Holy Spirit in me is working. I can feel Him in my emotions, in my worship. It's great! I just want to carry it over to the church service so desperately!
Praying for true worship,
Andy

You aren't alone, brother. I think there are a lot of people that wish they could bring themselves to fully express themselves during the assembly.
But when I see someone so moved in worship that they lift hands, close their eyes, shed tears, etc. I think "THAT IS AWESOME. THE SPIRIT IS STIRRING IN THEM." And most likely, that's what you think, too, when you see that. So if everyone is so encouraged to see people outwardly expressing themselves, then it's probably "safer" to do so than we think.
I used to struggle with this, too, brother. But it gets easier. At first, it feels weird and vulnerable to completely express yourself. [In fact, it's so uncomfortable that it disrupts your heart]. But stick with it, because the more you express yourself, the more natural it feels, until you feel completely uninhibited, like you do in the car, or the shower, or wherever you are so moved.
SM!
I do think it's awesome. Take Sunday for example. We were sitting a few rows behind an older lady that sits in the front row, or the 2nd row, I'm not sure which. Anyway, she (and others who are 'older') is always lifting both of her hands, she's usually one of the first to start clapping druing an upbeat song, she is just on fire in the assembly! It's inspiring!
Thank you God for her and others that expressively worship You!
